“You cursed another baby is why I’m upset!” Raven flapped her wings agitatedly. Getting into an argument before sunset was always terrible; she lacked the ability to slam a door or throw a punch if needed. She considered shitting on his head, but with fireballs at his disposal, Mal usually won any fights involving throwing things.

Mal slammed the heavy oak door closed, shaking the stone walls of the tower with the force of his rage. “He stepped on my foot!” The enraged words echoed down the side corridors.

“No, jackass. His father stepped on your foot.” Raven shifted on her perch near the windowsill, keeping one eye on the quickly-setting sun. “That baby was nowhere near you.” She could feel the change starting, her feathers falling off her in cascades, leaving smooth skin behind. “The man barely scuffed your heel. What’s gotten you into such a mood today?”

“They were my favorite shoes!” Mal screeched in a voice one octave higher than usual.

Raven’s world shrunk as her body shot up in size. She could feel her bones shifting and growing under her skin, and a slight itching sensation as her fierce beak shot back into her face, replaced by a human nose and frowning mouth. Raven stood before Mal, fully transformed, tapping her bare toe in impatience.

“What’s this really about?”

Mal waved his hand dramatically and two glasses of whiskey appeared, hovering before them on a silver tray. He handed one to Raven and took a generous sip from the other glass.

“You used to love it when I cursed people. Babies, the elderly...Remember that hunchback from Strongbow? You laughed so hard you molted.”

Raven sipped thoughtfully. “That was pretty funny at the time. But don’t you ever feel bad?” She sighed happily as the whiskey’s warmth spread through her like an alcoholic hug. “These are real people! Do you even remember them all?”

Mal gave Raven a blank look. “Why would I want to do that?”

With a sigh, Raven fell back into a brown leather armchair, sinking deeply into its comforting support. “That’s exactly my point. Years from now, you won’t even remember those shoes. But that baby you cursed today will be a grown man with an extra arm growing out of his ass.”

Mal chuckled. “I am rather proud of that one.”

“And what is going to happen to that poor kid when he tries to get rid of the extra arm?"

“Ummm…” Mal shifted a little in his chair.

“Yeah, you know exactly what is going to happen. That guy is going to start sprouting arms out of his ass cheeks like a damn feather duster because your curses get all big and crazy when something stands in their way.”

“I gave him an out clause!”

“Until you can find someone willing to shake all of your hands at once’ isn’t a fair clause. There aren’t that many three-armed people running around.”

Mal sat up straighter and grinned. "But, see? That's the genius bit. I didn't specify it had to be a person. It's like a riddle. He can shake a dog's paws or something, and it would totally qualify.
